Passive Tussle Into Unhinge

Over the last two decades, my physical inquiry has focused on finding a wild range in the joints that can shuttle through the body at will. The resulting aesthetic and technique has become its own language, which I call Unhinge.

Passive Tussle is the entry point to Unhinge. It is a partner form in which one dancer is physically maneuvered by the other, enabling the recipient to bypass their musculature. The joints are then freely manipulated into their fullest range of motion, unencumbered by the need for structural support. Like the jaw of a snake, the joint opens and then opens further, unhinged to its fullest exposure. Passive Tussle dovetails into Unhinge as a solo form, which requires this hypermobility.

I have my own physical language, called Unhinge. It is my research, my aesthetic, my technique, my practice.

A folding in, then a further folding in.

The concave side folds further to unhinge or expand the convex side.
Opens wider and around the concave side instead of expanding out.
It is cause and effect – all secondary points sequentially respond.
Like the jaws of a snake – expand, and then unlock the joint and expand more.

The unhinge points are:

  • Jaw
  • Neck
  • Armpit
  • Elbows
  • Wrists
  • Ribs
  • Hips
  • Knees
  • Ankles

We also think about:

  • Yield
  • Four walls
  • Prehensile feet
  • Eyes are round
  • Inner ear
